success

yesterday i had my first entirely hindi conversation! it was pretty exciting. i bought bananas from the fruit-wallah. FYI, they cost Rs12 (approx. $0.25) for a dozen.

i just figured out how to load my thumb drive on these computers here, so i can post some pictures soon.

i didn't realize how horrible the damage from hurricane katrina really was. all this running around has really cut me off from the outside world. now that i'm getting settled though, hopefully i'll have time to keep up with the news. sukdev, the owner of the restaurant where jojo and i eat most of our meals, has arranged for his paper boy to deliver an english-language paper to the restaurant every morning. this morning jojo and i read the Times of India and drank crappy instant coffee. i think that might become my morning routine.

Hi Connie,
We enjoy reading your blog and seeing the photos. So glad you're getting settled and actually having conversations with the inhabitants! Alex and Nick have started high school. We just got back from a trip to Wyoming to see the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Hope all is well with you. Love,
The Chartrains

dear connie
i am jealous. i feel incompetent in foreign languages. plus, i consider talking with this crazy kid michael in my plant systems class talking in a different language. or at least, i have to translate everything he says because he can't for the life of him say anything in a normal college vernacular. examples include (i'll put the translations in parentheses):
-"what are your plans upon evaporation?" (what do you wanna do after graduation?)
-"do you have any dead, processed wood you think i should read?" (have you read any good books lately that you recommend?)
-"what kind of audible sounds to you pleasure your ears with?" (what kind of music do you listen to?)
-"has anything exciting happened in the last three suns?" (anything exciting happen over the weekend?)
-"when do you get your leaf?" (when will you graduate?)
-"what is your existence called?" (what's your name?)
-"it was a pleasure to meet your energy" (i think that one you can get...but still.)

that's some pretty hardcore translation on my part. especially since it seems to take me an extra twenty seconds to figure out what the hell he just asked me, and then another few seconds to think of a response.
